Spaghetti and Meatballs for All: A Mathematical Story

Author: Marilyn Burns

Illustrator: Debbie Tilley

Reading Level: 4th

Page Length: 32

REVIEW & PLOT SUMMARY: This is a story of a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Comfort, who decide to have a family reunion and serve spaghetti and meatballs. Marilyn Burns, a math consultant is the author and has written several other children’s math books.  I thought her approach to teaching area and perimeter was annoying to the degree that I could barely finish the book. The repetition used by having family arrive in different intervals so that chairs and tables were reassembled in a seating order was nerve-racking.

I barely finished the book and I think if anyone enjoys it they would be under the fourth grade level of reading for which it is written.

AREAS FOR TEACHING: Math (areas and perimeter, word problems)
